His fingers advance over the edge of the rock face and his eyes follow like obedient slaves. Just that--nothing else is visible. He blinks twice and disappears.

    I like that he relies on touch and not sight. I do not think that is a common choice.

  2. When you can't see because it's so very dark, it makes sense to go by touch.

    Also, at least with Gollum, I'm rather sure he started with straining his eyes to see in the dark and then stopped and went by touch. He was in the Misty Mountains a long, long time.

    It's all very metaphorical.
